Question Road trip - West coast of Scotland - Must see places?

Its been many years since i was in Scotland and I would like to take the wife and ankle bite on a road trip along the west coast.. I do not have any real knowledge on the area other than pictures I have seen onthe net and TV etc..

I am thinking about about a week on the road but need some ideas of places to visit and places the see so that I can put together an itinery..

So I would be most grateful for any travel tips. Is accommodation something that needs to be booked in advance or can you just turn up and expect to find a room? I am not looking for flash hotels i would be happy with a tent but the wife will want a little more home comforts so to speak... Is the traffic a nightmare during the summer months with other tourist pootling along the roads?

Any recommeded places to stay or places to avoid..? I would not mind heading inland a few times if there is something worth seeing, I am not a great city person and prefer the outdoors and dramatic scenery.. I would like to go up Ben Nevis if i can put it on the route as i haven't done that one yet.. How far north is it worth going and is John O'Groats worth the extra slog?

We have not done a road trip for a number of years, the last one was doing 4000 miles around the south western US in 18 days... it was an amazing experience and we would like to do another but nearer to home, well ish..

Get down the mull of kintyre peninsular mate, absolutely gorgeous down there. Inverary is always worth a visit for the jail, the castle and the views. Get down the bottom of the peninsular to Campbeltown and if you fancy a nice beach go out the other side of there and head for Southend (yes it's really called that) and there's some lovely off the beaten track beaches down that way.

If you love fresh sea food, head off to Loch Fyne, there's the original Loch Fyne fisheries restaurant up there and all sorts of other really nice fish restaurants.

I love that area and used to get up there several times a year, haven't been for a couple of years now and am seriously pining to get up there again, hoping to go later in the year with a bit of luck.

I always used to book self catering, but last time, Amy and I just headed up with nothing booked and slept in B&B's all round the place.

John O Groats is a hell of a long slog to have to pay to park at the end and stand and look at the sea off a cliff. Last time we did it, we just stayed in the car, turned round and drove back again

thanks, i quite like the idea of chilling on some of the those beaches and maybe doing a spot of kayaking/diving or maybe just fishing while the nipper makes sand castles. We do not want to spend every hour on the road so wether permitting days like that wil be great.. I prefer finding accommodation as i go along but when we did that in Snowdonia a few years back we ended up staying in a proper hovel one night as there was no room at the Inn.......

the weather as always may screw the whole thing up but hey ho we can't plan for everything..

Nige, what Ian said but i'm biased as i stay on Loch Fyne!
If its peace and quiet with stunning scenery your after, the really you can't look much further than Argyll. Its not too far for you too travel with the wee one, also not too touristy. Plenty self catering houses about, this also might give you more freedom with the wee one, as i know this suits us better..
I will give you a shout later once i'm finished work..

After you have climbed ben nevis, take a drive up the length of Loch Ness! Great if the weather is good!
Also i can recommend taking a drive to Aviemore in the Cairngorm mountains. Jump on the finicular railway that will take you up Cairngorm Mountain to the UK's highest restaraunt, absolutley breathtaking views up there!
