It is your timing belt on its way out.. I've just shelled out for a new one. The Vec has only done 34k.

34K is extreemly low, the change intervals on a 1.9CDTI is 100K and the water pumps are what usually start to go, my Cam belt was fine when I took it off at 91K. A whining noise from the cam area is usually an indication of the water pump going. Knocking noises are usually associated with things like suspension, what exactly were the symptoms and the cause?
How old i the car?
Rubber degrades over time, even if the car is on low miles i would change the belt after 4-5 years to be on the safe side.
My car is 1.8VVTI SRI 58 plate. The mechanic said one of the rollers were failing so i would need a new full timing kit.
I think i'm quite lucky i havent trashed the engine as i have been using the car for 4 weeks with the loud knocking noise.
I still think 34k is low to have a replacement. Vauxhall should of addressed this in there warrantys and have it covered.
You should always replace the rollers and water pump at the same time and the lot come in around the £150 mark inc VAT + fitting. It should not be failing at that age and mileage, it was probably over tightened when it was last done.
Had the same thing happen many years ago on a Mondeo Si i owned. T/Belt would of been fine but one of the rollers had cracked and was ripping into the belt. The noise was quite loud, loud enough for me to get it investigated really quickly. Replaced the lot with a 'Gates' timing belt kit.
