I could be wrong, but i dont think the EGR would do this.....sounds more like an induction issue, throttle body or Idle valve (If these have them?)

Sorry forgot to say car is 1.9 cdti 2006 120

Car started and ran ok today.
Gave it a good thrash to clear it out ran fine but quite a bit of smoke.
No smoke when at idle or reving only under load.

Maybe sling some fuel treatment in too...Cataclean, Wynns Diesel Power 3/ Wynns Diesel Clean 3 or Millers Ecomax.

I can highly recommend Cataclean...as ive personally had positive results in every car ive used it in...better running and better MPG.

Note: - I am talking about a diesel here, not a petrol.
EGR would usually cause the car to run ruff (really ruff if bad) and into limp mode but not to cut out.

The butterfly on the throttle housing however, if the electrics are dodgy (which they have been know to be in this area), could cause the throttle body valve to snap shut and this would cause the engine to die.

If you get the cutting out again, as a temp trial, remove the electrical feed connector to the throttle body. Again, this is only for a diesel.
