Default Anyone keep chickens??? Or Grow their Own?

    Afternoon all,

Ive recently caught the GYO (grow your own) Bug. Have been digging the garden up all weekend so far planted coriander, Basil, Parsley, Mint, Carrots, Broccoli, Onions and gonna plant some potatoes soon.
Also when i return from a 3week excercise will be planting tomatoes, beetroot, strawberries and hopefully some raspberries/blueberries (my daughter loves these).

What im after from you lot is a bit of advice if any of you keep chickens? A rough costing etc of keeping them i love the idea of getting my eggs fresh from my own garden and watching my daughter chase the hens around the place lol

My mates dad has chickens, iirc it's more expensive then you think, I thought about it for my kids etc similar reasons to you but got put off by it.

I can find out exactly what he spends a month and what's needed if like? I'll text him later.

I haven't got the chickens, but do grow my own with a 350sq yard allotment.

Word of advice put the mint in a potin your conservatory or kitchen. It spreads like like a whores legs....

We have 4 chickens and 2 Ducks for eggs and a 1000 square foot veggie patch and its the best thing we did !!!!!

Our chicks and Ducks cost about £3.50 a month for food and about £5 a month for bedding !!!!

But we sell the eggs for £1.50 a half dozen and are getting about £10 a week from them

The most expensive bit will be the hen house but have a look on egay as there are some very good ones on there for about £120 delivered

Oh and be prepared for them to eat EVERY single plant and blade of grass you let them get !!!!!!!

    Back in a V6 !!!!!!!!!!!! And lovin it !!!

I'll give him a bell later...

I know the chickens where peanuts, apparently you can sometimes get em for free from local egg farmers, once they go down to only laying a couple of eggs they want rid.
