    Default Cracked tyres

I just bought some part worns given the deal was pretty good - brand tyres for a few bob. They have over 6mm tread, so that's good. But, they do have slight cracks - not in the sidewall but within the tread.

What's the real life answer to how safe they are? I'm happy buying part worns because they go up and down the motorway so financially it works ok - but I haven't had any with cracks before.

I know the official answer is 'don't use them', but given the bulk of the rubber is good - is it fair to say that they will be fine?

N.B: the cracks are VERY slight.

To be fair, if it didn't bother you then you wouldn't be askIng for opinions. So the fact your asking means it bothers you, so if I were you I would get them replaced for peace of mind. Hth.

Not really mate. The current ones have crackes in the actual sidewalls, and big ones, and I've not had a near death experience yet. I just thought that a tyre fitter or mechanic amongst us might say 'never' or 'so long as there is plenty of rubber you'll be fine'.

Basically what Paz says. You know the answer to your question
The rubber has dried out and perished, hence the cracks.
Oh, and I used to be a tyre fitter.

Ah a tyre fitter - just the man then. Did you ever experience someone who's tyre blew and the only possible reason was because of cracking?

I know what you're saying guys.. but with 6mm of tread I just think that they might be fine.

The fact that you are questioning them means you know that they could be a danger. Why risk it?

If you only do motorway miles buy some half decent budget tyres....at least they'll be new

My grandmother had the same tyres on her car for 9 years. She covered 6000 miles in that time. Just nipping round town. Tyres had 6/7 mm of tread but started cracking as described earlier. The advice given was that due to the age of the tyres, to get them changed.

Personally I'd never get a part worn, but with those cracks I'd be binning them ASAP

mate - at 70mph+ on the motorway (which I think you say you mainly do motorway miles) this is the only 4 things keeping you in contact with the tarmac in the correct direction..

My advice - dont risk it. THe rubber is old and therefore dried. You dont know the state of the rubber that you cant see

you might not have had a near death experience yet but if you do in the future somebody in another vehicle with good tyres could have one as well if you lose control due to a blow out

The car I just bought had cracks in the tread and after a few days I got to work with a flat tyre,.. 2" slit in the tread. I'd get em changed.
