Default is oil supposed to be here?

i changed the thermostat yesterday, this went smoothly and works a treat thanks to the how to on this forum but whilst doing it i removed the boost pipe to find this....

can anyone tell me why there is oil all down this pipe... when i got the car in september the guy told me he had to replace the turbo but he fitted one from an 09 car that had covered 17k so it shouldnt be the turbo... i do not drive it stupidly or harshly... i am hoping it was from when the turbo went before i got it and he just didnt clean it out but the fact that it looks to be fresh oil worries me..

is oil really supposed to be there and if its not then what are the potential causes of this...

    thanks in advance guys...

Normal m8 nothing to fear. If you are having problems with the engine revving on it's own accord then you may have an issue but other than that, what you see there is normal.

you will always get a trace of oil in the boost pipework due to the closed crank case vent system, some folk add an additional catch tank & or vent to atmosphere... this oil mixes with the egr soot & that's the cause of the swirl valve failure.
IMO a trace of oil isn't a bad thing if the egr is blanked & mapped out

Yeah most turbo engines mostly diesel get a bit in the intake pipes, nothing to worry about mate. Think its residue from the engine breather and turbo

Perfectly normal, as has been said, it is oil from the breather system on these cars and the engine burns it off as it runs. Nothing to worry about.

cheers guys it puts me at ease knowing its normal... would it be beneficial to fit an oil catch tank then to eradicate this problem? my car is standard, its not mapped or the egr is not blanked or anything but i share this car with the mrs so i really dont want it to let her down, and it will make more work for me in the long run...

also cold anyone recommend a link from ebay or such that would be suitable to fit the the vecccy

    thanks again for responses..
