    Question Engine Crunch On Start

Hi All, I have a 1.9 CDTI 150 (2007). When I start the Car there's a loud crunch almost as if cogs are catching. Once its turned over its fine ( Apart from a whiney crankshaft pully) It's not happening all the time it's maybe 1 in 5. Does anyone have any idea what it could be. Thanks.

Could it be the DMF starting to break down?

I have thought it could be that. I'm hoping it's not obliviously because of the cost. Do you know of anyway to check it ?

Not a diesel man myself, but is the crunch still there is you start the car with the clutch pedal pressed in?

A failing DMF can also effect your MPG.

Mpg is still good. I do dip the clutch when I start it up but it does annoyingly still make the noise.

If it is only intermittent, I think it could be the starter motor. I would check that out first.

Somebody else mentioned the starter motor but is there any way of checking it though?

I would need to see it and hear it, but if it sounds like a bag of bolts being dragged through a crusher it will amost certainly be the starter motor. Does it stop as soon as you release the ignition key?

You've described the noise to a T. It sounds just like that. I've fitted starters on friends cars in the past and Ive heard they're abit of a pain on Vectra's but I'll give it ago. If the starter isn't replaced can it do damage to any other parts ? I've got the cam belt & water pump being done next month and that's a big dent in the pocket ( I'm not gonna try that myself as a friend tried it on a bm E46 and got the timing wrong and blew the lot) thanks for getting back to me so quick earlier. Cheers

I can't remember exactly how the starter works. Basically an electric motor turns a shaft which in turn throws a cog forward, this then engages with the ring gear on the fly wheel, which turns the engine over. The noise is usually caused by the cog not messhing properly with the ring gear. The reasons for this could either be the cog catching on the shaft or not properly engaging the fly wheel. It is not as bad as it sounds, but the problem will get worse. Sometimes a strip down and clean can prolong the life of the starter, but personally I think it is more bother than it is worth, unless you have access to a garage with all the necessary equipment.
