Default Looking for advice about cat D cars

As some will be aware I have been looking around at these cars, I have come across this which appears to be a bit of a bargain. I would contact the guy first to see exactly what happened and what he already has to repair it, then find out what it is realistically going to cost. But as far as Cat D goes I am a little unsure.

    Any advice is great.

    Here is the car.

Cat D can be quite different levels of damage - don't believe what you hear that it's only ever minor damage, sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. A "D" is where the insurance company paid out and wrote the car off while it was stolen and still missing, so when it was written off no one knew if would ever be found or what state it would be in. When it gets found, whatever the damage, the insurance company don't want to keep the car and the owner isn't entitled to have it back because he's been paid cash. So it could be just a few scratches, could be sizeable crash damage. It could be the same amount of damage as a "C", but with the C the car is present when it's written off.

Looking at the pics it needs a lot of side repair, new rear quarter.

The side will is missing and the metal that on view looks damaged which I'd imagine is quite a big repair so could cost a fair bit to have redone properly.

That damage to the sill looks very severe and he says that he's fixed most of it so why hasn't he put updated pics on?

    Default cat d

a car can also be a cat d right off even if it has not been stolen, cat d cars usually come with less damage than a cat c but saying that i have seen some cat c cars with very very minimal damage and cat d ones with more , but i do no a cat d car gets no mention on the log book that its a cat d but a cat c does while were on the subject just in case you didnt know a cat B right off can not be repaired and but back on the road, but it can be broken down and there parts sold, where as a cat a car has to be crushed and not even stripped down and sold for spare parts ,

Well I have just been looking at the price of panels etc and it is not cheap lol, £900 brand new for a rear quarter, without paint. Did not even bother looking at the rest of the parts. There is no bargain to be had there as I could hold out and get one for around £17,000. Cheers for the heads up on the Cats.

i would not go for than one if it was me.. there is more involved than meets the eye fixing side damage like that.. I have done a C and D before but i stick to front and rear damaged cars and avoid side impact damaged cars..
