They love to smoke. Watch for judders (injector, SCV, EGR problems) and coolant loss.

SCV ? ,so if it smokes heavy on acceleration or doesn't rev smoothly it's not healthy ?,EGR can be cleaned and the injectors,is that the injectors themselves or the harness ?.I guess the coolant loss is a bit harder first seeing a car, unless the coolants low or the header tanks all stained ?.

Sorry mate SCV - suction control valves in the high pressure fuel pump tend to stick and cause juddering under acceleration, heavy black smoke under hard acceleration is usually an EGR problem, the injecotrs themselves can cause juddering although that's quite rare. If there is a problem with the coolant (either head gasket or other problems) you should notice it within a few miles.
Cleaning the EGR on this engine does nothing sadly...

The 3.0 V6 CDTI diesel should pull cleanly from 1k rpm and then pull cleanly and smoothly all the way up to the rev limiter (mine does anyway).
If the tick over is lumpy then chances are the injectors could be getting ready for a recon/clean etc.
If the car fails to pull cleanly it could be the SCVs or just the fuel filter, if it will only rev up to 3k then the EGR could need replacing, people say cleaning it doesn't work too well.
Economy wise, round town I get 30 mpg and on a run I get 53-ish mpg. Would I change it for another engine, hell no, I love it.
