Default 2006 CDTI Intermittent engine not starting

    Hello all!

Seem to have developed a bit of a weird fault. Engine won't start. It is the 120 engine. This problem sems to have gotten worse over time. It was incredibly intermittent and is now more regular as it is almost every time I try to start now.

The problem is that when you turn on the ignitionthe engine management light does not turn on and when it does this it will not start. In normal operation on ignition the Battery, airbag, Oil, Traction Control, ABS and engine management light all come on, after a couple of seconds the airbag light, oil light and the abs light go out and the car will start.

When the car won't start the battery, air bag, oil, traction control and ABS light come on but no engine management light. After a couple of seconds the airbag light, oil and abs light go out, tc and battery stay on. Also I have notice when it does this the fuel gauge does not move.

As I said this did start out a long time ago as highly intermittent and if you turn the ignition off and on again the EML would come on. The car seems to start fine in the morning but after I have driven any distance and then try to start it this problem happens. Just wondered if anyone else has had this problem or could point me in a direction?
    Thanks all!

Not sure about all the syptoms stated but bad starting from hot (after the car has started normally when cold) usually means the crank sensor is goosed.

    Hi
Check all your battery connections and earth points in the engine bay and on the engine to body,
if all is ok then see if you can get the ecu codes read, then pop back and post them.

    Looks like a bad earth/ loom connector/ecu.

    confused

I did try to get an error code but at the time the eml was not coming on it wouldn't communicate. I take it thats because without that light on its not talking to the system?

I'll try my best to get a reading as it logs the last fault code in its memory i think?

I'd be going to get codes read.

But if theirs no codes it could be a can bus with ecu being lazy or wteva.

And turning key off and on you giving it bit of kick up the backside to wake up.

Just a quick update, I haven't been able to borrow a code reader so unfortunately the car is booked into the stealers tomorrow.

If hopefully they fix it I will update with the outcome or the codes at the very least

    Been to the stealers today!

Car got tech 2 diagnostic and apparently no fault code, when speaking to the service receptionist I asked for the fault codes and I got a message saying that there was " No magnatory component ", I think this was suppose to mean " No mandatory component ".

I asked what the resolution was for this and was told the ECU would have to be replaced and they were then happy to quote me £1,203 which did include todays tech 2 diagnostic.

    Happy days!

You can get secondhand ecu's and programme them in via op-com Tech2
