Thumbs up BSR PPC Stage 1 remap (of special interest to 2.0T owners!!)

I've mentioned this in a few posts, but I thought I'd post all the relevant info here for people to see.

    What is it?

The PPC is a unit made by Swedish Tuning company BSR for a variety of makes of car, e.g. Saab, Volvo, Skoda, Audi, Opel/Vx to name a few.

The remap is performed by a small 'box of tricks' that plugs into the OBDII (Tech 2) socket on the car. The engine ECU is then reprogrammed (remapped) with the new software from BSR.

If BSR release make any tweaks to the remap for your model, they will e-mail you and you can go to the website for an update. The PPC box plugs into your PC via USB and the new software downloaded straight into the unit.

The unique feature of this product is that it can then program the car back to the original state, very useful if the car has to go into a dealer for anything. It will all look as normal to them.

This tune/revert to original process can be performed as often as required.

Here's a link to a movie on the BSR website, showing how it works.

    How much does it cost?

Well, if you buy it directly from BSR Sweden it's going to cost you more than buying it from a distributor in the UK. I bought mine from partsforsaabs.com. The link will take you straight to the product. It's now £25 cheaper than when I bought mine in February!

But it's a Saab site you may say! Yes, but as the 2.0T engine in a Vec C/Signum is a Saab engine (same as in the Saab 9-3 SS) they (PFS) deal with the BSR PPC unit. All you have to do is give them the VIN number to make sure that the unit is programmed with the specific software for your car.

Do they do the software for any other engines?

Unfortunately not. The only Vx/Opel engine that they have remapped for is the 2.0T in the Vec C/Signum.

    What are the results like?

I think this post (edited to avoid repeating) that I made on Vectra Sport, after I had tuned the car, will pretty much sum it up.......

"Got my BSR PPC tuning box today and re-programmed the ECU. Somewhat nerve racking six/seven minutes as it reprogrammed as I had power steering warning lights, TC lights etc. pop up during the process!! Obviously an effect of the reprogramming.

Anyway, after the reprogramming the engine started as usual and all was well - no warning lights, phew!

Had already taken the car for a spin before programming to warm it up as recommended and to have as recent a feel for the car as possible.

Set off on the same route, about 15 miles, which involved some dual-carriageway going into roundabouts and up hills. Result?

The car is definitely quicker off the mark, sooooo much quicker when you start to go through the gears and the boost is kicking in. Will hit 60mph in second gear, in third it's absolutely flying (and there's still three more gears to go!!!)
Sharper response, pick-up and better acceleration. I had a BIG smile on my face as I was driving it.

Very nice improvement, whilst still saying within sensible parameters for the gearbox and transmission."

    What gains did it give?

Expect an increase of around 30bhp and 35lbft. I recently had the car rollered and it gave a result of 218bhp (fly) and 247lbft

    Am I happy with it?

    Absolutely.

Would I recommend it to other people?

    Definitely.

I changed over to SUL fuel after the remap (recommended) and if anything it has actually got better. I wouldn't expect any decrease in mpg if you used the same fuel before and after.

I certainly did. Because of the nature of the device I was able to do two runs on the same RR day - one as standard, one remapped. Standard - 183bhp/190 lb.ft Remapped - 212bhp/230lb.ft

    few Q's for you duncan

whats your average mpg after the remap?
i'm getting approx 25mpg on average, i'd like to be getting about 30

whats the standerd 0-60 for the 2.0t? some sites say 8.8 some 8.1
whats the most i can expect it to shave off the 0-60?

445+vat is the cheapest i've found for the unit - does that sound about right?

    cheers

    Hi Mick

    >few Q's for you duncan

    In reply....

    >whats your average mpg after the remap?

Anywhere between 23 and 32mpg - depends how I'm driving and what sort of driving i.e. town, motorway etc. I didn't notice any real decrease in mpg after the remap. I'd say I'd average around the 27/28 mpg with mixed driving, but I do have a heavy right foot!!

    >whats the standerd 0-60 for the 2.0t? some sites say 8.8 some 8.1
whats the most i can expect it to shave off the 0-60?

The Vx figures for the 2.0T are 8.1 for the Vec, 8.4 for the Signum. You'll probably knock a second off the 0-60 time, but it's not so much the 0-60 time that you'll see the difference with the remap. It's the mid-range where it is totally transformed.

    >445+vat is the cheapest i've found for the unit - does that sound about right?

That's a very good price - where was that from?

P.S. I don't know when I'll be up in the NE next, but if it's before you've bought the unit you're more than welcome to have a spin in mine and see what it's like with the remap.
