    Default CDTI (120) Top end knock problem

    Hi all, great site, you've helped me sort loads of issues out and saved me a fortune. I hoping you can help with this?

    As of this morning I started to here an intermittant knocking from the engine, got to work (about 10 miles) and could not identify the noise.

    Driving home it was the same, then about 5 miles from home it became constant, then a little louder and then i think an additional noise. I pulled over and got towed the rest of the way home.

    Oils fine, changed every 6K, timing belt in one peice, took cam cover off and all looks good. No oil lights, warning lights, engine lights or excess smoke from the engine.

    Any one have any ideas or had this issue????

    I'm thinking maybe broken valve spring, or maybe shim issue?

    Going to check clearances in the morning, then it's a cam out job next. I'd be susprised if it's a shim due to the speed the issue has come up.

    Any help greatly appreciated

    So far on these engines I've changed about 8 camshafts, the Vauxhall ones are especially prone to wear.
    I use second-hand Alfa Romeo or Fiat 1.9 JTD's camshafts they don't seem to have the same problem,
    on the 120 8v usually a cam lobe becomes worn down and clatters against the shim, you can adjust the shims, but if its knocking,
    assume the worst and no amount of shimming will take the clearance up.

    Now your problems seems different in as much the noise quickly got louder over a short period of time, perhaps oil starvation but usually the camshaft slowly wears and the noise is gradual, in fact some owners don't even realise there's a problem because they become used to the sound until its too late, (poor starting can be a sign of this in the winter).

    Pull the cam out and inspect the camshaft lobe and "mic them up" also check the shims & buckets for cracks, hopefully you will get away with a oil flush and new cam.
