Easy to work on cheap and plentiful parts, new and second hand.
How noisy is the chain on the cam drive? If the chain is noisy and it breaks then the engine is toast.
Cam chain and sprocket replacement is a fun packed job.

hey buddy, to be honest ive no idea as i havent even looked under the bonnet yet, anything like replacing the chain i prob would get involved with so i would just advice her to get it done, but things i know i can do like filters and plugs would save her having to pay someone to do it saving her money to get the chain done if needs be, i could do with having a look at some pics (haynes manual style) if anyone knows of any sits i can look at.

Check out the corsa forums for hints and tips. Its all straightforward on the servicing side of things TBH. Haynes manual is the usual, some times good some times ok
Good youtube on the chain replacement if you are into mechy things (its an Agila but same engine). Some guys to a really good job on these sort of things.

They are noisy! Check Youtube again for some examples. Seem to suffer from using crap oil or not changing it regularly enough. I was advised to change my son's at about 92 K but some go a lower miles some alot higher. You just get a rattling engine speed related noise from the cam drive side. It takes quite a while to actually get to the chain aux drives, water pump, remove engine cover (numerous fastners) etc. Enjoy the servicing!

Vehicle : Mk1 renault scenic... I know I know but it drives

    Trim : Basic

    Engine : 1.6 16v

    Year : 2003

As above check for chain noise.

Also of its got mayo under filler cap etc. don't assume it's head. They suffer water pump gasket problems.

If you do decide to get brave I've got the timing tools your more than welcome to borrow.

You'll be looking at about 4 hours to do it.

Also need to check underneath, sub frame axle mounting point etc for rust.

Get the rear drums off and check the friction material and also the cylinders.
