    Default Flashing 3rd Brake Light

    Hi folks, hope you're all well?

    Just purchased a flashing 3rd brake light off eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Flashing-3...item336716f798) as I think they look pretty cool.

    Anybody else got one fitted? I've been told it's a doddle to fit it, just fits in line with the current wiring. I've just thought though, is it likely to through up a canbus warning every time I brake?

    Reason for rejection

    e. shows other than a steady red light to the rear when any service brake is applied

    Now that is interesting!

    I think a lot of people are justifying it by the Road Vehicle Lighting Regs 1989
    Lamps to show a steady light
    13.
    (1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), no vehicle shall be fitted with a lamp which automatically emits a flashing light.

    (2) Paragraph (1) does not apply in respect of-

    • a) a direction indicator;

    • b) a headlamp fitted to an emergency vehicle;

    • c) a warning beacon or special warning lamp;

    • d) a lamp or illuminated sign fitted to a vehicle used for police purposes;

    • e) a green warning lamp used as an anti-lock brake indicator; or

    • f) lamps forming part of a traffic sign.

    But your post sounds more reasonable. I wonder if I can install an override switch to turn it on or off?

    Brake lights are specifically covered in the RVLA, and so don't come under 'special warning lamp' category. That's for things like the orange warning beacons on maintenance, large or slow moving vehicles.

    There is an exception for brake lights that flash, and it's very recent legislation. Under emergency braking, brake lights are permitted to rapidly flash. I believe facelift Vectra Cs do this anyway.

    Really, most of the RVLA 1989 has been superseded so many times, it's very difficult to find what the current situation is. However, the current legislation follows ECE Regulation 48 - which is in a more up to date version on the EC website. But it's no less tedious to read through than the RVLA

    It says something in the manual about the siggy doing this under hard breaking at speed. Can anyone confirm? I haven't had a chance to test it.

    Vectra is the same. Sure its activated when the ABS cuts in. The Insignia does it too, saw a guy brake late from a red light a while back and his was flashing.

    During an MOT test, when pressing the brake pedal, it won't activate the emergency braking, so the brake lights shouldn't flash.

    Some cars now also flash the hazard lights under energetic breaking.
