    Vehicle : Vectra 1.8 SRi

    Trim : SRi

    Engine : Z18XE

    Year : 2004

Default Why is my Vec handling like a boat?

Right then, I've read up on here about the poor OE ARB's that Vectra's have fitted and I'm wondering if this is the problem with mine. It handles terribly! It feels like the rear of the car has an awful lot less grip than the front. The tyres on it are fine and have plenty of tread. How do I tell what the problem is? The car seems to roll around a bit which made me think it might be ARB's. It doesn't seem to dive too much under braking so to my mind that means it's not the shocks that are gone? Can anyone advise me as to how and what to look at on my Vec to determine what the problem is?

Mine handles like a boat all the time

Is your car an LS or similar?

The shocks as far as I can tell ont he LS models etc are soft compaired tot he sporty handeling on the SRI...

I fitted Eibach Pro springs to mine which have helped imporve the handeling and roll in the corners but it still lacks feel when chucking it about...

Next stop for me is new shocks!

Mine is an SRi with standard shocks and springs. It in an 04 with 70k miles on. I had an LS which I lowered 45 and 40mm with PI springs and that handled ten times better than my SRi does!

Knackered upper control arm bushes will make the rear feel really strange.

70k would also perhaps indicate that the shocks have gone, they dont last for ever!

I'll have a look at this first then and then go from there. I'd like to lower it a touch anyway but need to save up some penny's for shocks and springs! Are OE shocks expensive or cheaper than a decent set of Bilstein shocks? How much are the bushes and are they a pain in the backside to fit?

My money's on the shocks being gone. Rear shocks can be changed in about 5-10 minutes a side, it's only two bolts (one top, one bottom). Rear ARB bushes are a bit more fiddly but not too terrible to do. I'd be happy to change them for you if you get stuck and can be bothered to drive down to me with the new parts.

Is it worth replacing all 4 shocks whilst I'm doing them or is there no point? Is it worth doing everythign such as ARB's and bushes while I'm at it and is the OE stuff any good or is it all crap and I'd be better off uprating it?
