Default Rattle on idle, dreaded DMF

    Hey guys,

Quick question and I'm dreading the outcome. I've only had my Vectra CDTI 150 for 2 weeks and for the passed two days on out of gear and on idle there is a definate audible 'rattle'. Pressing the clutch pedal in silences this rattle, letting the pedal out (still in neutral) and the rattle re-appears .

Can anyone advise the possible problem, I'm expecting DMF but wondered if there is anything else (I read the clutch release bearing can cause this too).

    Thanks in advance.

Hi mate. More than likely it's the DMF.

It's advisable to get it all replaced. The clutch / bearing / slave cylinder (3-piece clutch kit), and the DMF. It's false economy not to.

Expect to pay about £750 to £850 for the full job from a good independent mechanic (for parts and labour). Don't go to a main dealer, you'll pay double that!

Did you get the car from a dealer? (noticed you only had it two weeks). If so, go back as you should've got a warranty

Cheers mate - I expected as much, and broke the news to a rather disgruntled mrs . We have a local mechanic we normally use, so will get a quote.

It was a private sale, so no cover there - just bloomin typical as I'm dead sure there wasn't any rattle when I test drove it, it's only come about in the last few days.

Still once it's all done, it should be okay for a while (fingers crossed)

    Thanks,

    Bjorn

How many miles has the car done?

Would it do any additional damage continuing to run the car until the DMF breaks down totally?

Does it not damage the gearbox if the DMF break down completely?

My DMF ran for 125k miles from new. Changed everything while the 'box was out. Been good for 10k now, hoping many many more!

If it was me. I'd get it done sooner rather than later.

I had a rattle when the clutch was slightly depressed. Car is CDTi 150 on 80k. Took it to a local garage who confirmed it was the DMF. Quoted me 1200 quid and watched the blood drain from my face. Went and got 3 other quotes all around the same, Mr Clutch being the cheapest at £936 with 2 year warranty. Thats for a clutch, CSC, DMF fitted.

I want to burn it to the ground....

Car has done 85k, rattle has gotten noticeably louder in the past couple of days - have it booked in for Monday at a local garage
