Eek Turbo making a louder whistling noise

    Hi.

My cdti 150's is making a louder whitle/whine sound from cold at about 1300 rpm to 1700rpm. It gradually quietens when it warms up. Sounds a bit like blowing over the top of a bottle/siren sound. Still drives fine and pulls well with no lights on dash.
I have taken off the aux belt and run it to see if it was still there to eliminate the alternator/AC and drive pulleys. And the noise is still there so it can only be the turbo or poss cam belt tensioner/waterpump. The belt and tensioners and waterpump were changed about 45000 miles ago.

If it is the turbo should I be worried or can I just carry on driving it? Or is it something I must get sorted immediately. I have found new turbos for sale on ebay for around £480 which I havn't got at the moment.

I was wondering if there was a possibility of it breaking up and then being drawn into the engine. Or this was a very unlikely outcome and the noise would just slowly get worse and I could just carry on driving it.

    cheers

    Stuart

Should be easy enough to trace and confirm if it is the turbo
Simply raise the bonnet and ask someone to raise the revs very slowly and call out each 250rpm

You can then try to find out where exactly the noise is coming from, if it is the turbo
Let the engine cool, then repair or replace the failed hose or pipe

Very unlikely for a turbo vane to end up in the engine
More likely to be the other way round and engine debris ending up within the turbo and damaging that

I have tried having my head under the bonnet with someone raising the revs. It definitely seems to be coming from the front and there appears to be no leaks/splits in the pipes. But as you know sound travels and it is very difficult to pinpoint the exact place. I have looked around the intercooler for any oily marks and that all seems ok. I was thinking it was turbo bearings making the noise and when they warmed up the noise quietened.

My dad, in the days before computers, used to put a wooden handled screwdriver to different parts of the engine and put his ear to the handle, he reckoned it helped pin it down against the background noise. He knew what he was doing, was a qualified motor fitter, so might be worth a go.

Still a very handy trick now mate.

I've got a stethoscope in my tool box.

But if I'm on exercise or whatever I use a large screwdriver/ extention bar

i must agree, ive had my 150 from 6 months old and 12k and its always done that, still does it its a 08 plate and 47k. if it was anything serious either the engine would go kapoot or the engine management would let you know. if your saying it drives fine etc then i wouldn't worry about it. i put a K&N cone filter on it you don't really get induction noise but the turbo noise is imence!! when you lift your foot it sounds like a dump valve also.

have you just started noticing it mabe??

I've had mine for 3 years and done nearly 70000 miles. But this noise has only been noticeable for the last month or so. Thats why I am a bit concerned.
