Unhappy Vibrating rattle at 2000rpm – Please help

    Hello there fellow Vectra folk,

I’m new to the wonderful world of Vectra’s and so far my new purchase is fantastic. I’ve recently bought a 1.9CDTi (120) SRi on an 05 plate. It had 11,400 miles on it when I bought it and in the few days I’ve had it I’ve clocked up nearly 500 miles just messin’ about

The car has a noise which I have started to notice more and more. Between about 2,000 and 3,000 rpm there is a vibrating rattle (very much like a scratching sound). Depress the clutch and the sound disappears instantly. It sounds like it is coming from somewhere under or in front of the steering wheel/ dash area.

Has anyone any experience with this type of noise before? I’m going to book into the main dealership and see what happens – however I’ve never found a garage that could identify a noise – they seem to disapear the instant the mechanic drives the car

Hi there mate to the site BTW.

I had exactly the same sort of noise mate, does it happen or get louder when you hold the rev as opposed to acelerating through the rev range?

If so then it will more than likely be the drive shaft bearing, I had numerous problems getting it diagnosed and in the end it took nearly a year one dealer even tried to tell me that it was a 'characteristic' of the car

Anyhoo a different dealer got a field engineer out and they finally changed the driveshaft bearing and it cured it.

    HTH.

Yeah, I'd despair if mechanics at certain garages drove my car! Sorry m8, couldn't resist picking up on that typo.

Back to your question. I'm positive there was a thread by somebody else with the same problem, I'll see if i can find it.....

Edit: Just saw that Basil posted as I was typing. it may very well have been his thread I was referring to!

That's it exactly! If you gain or loose rpm the sound dips a way for a moment, hold it and it gets worse.

Is a driveshaft bearing replacement a big job?

And thanks for such a quick reply

Yep thats the one mate sounds exactly like the same problem.

Not sure how big a job the bearing replacement is as it was in for a week anyway for investigation and it was towards the end of said week when they cracked it. The problem you might have is convincing them to do the job on your recommendation.

Is your car still under warranty?

Yeap, still got 18 months left on warranty. I'll ring them on Monday and see if I can get them to help.

If you have any problems getting them to take your word for it get them to ring Reg Vardy in lenton, Nottingham and ask for Michelle the service manager and she will put them right, as she was as engrossed in my problem as I was and just as overjoyed when they finally managed to crack it.

Just tell them to ask her about Mr Bell's grinding noise on his Vectra and she'll click straight away.

Hope you get it sorted mate.

Thanks so much for your help. If I don't get any joy from my dealer I will see if I can drop it off down in Lenton

Failing that I will take to a little back street garage I use for my French pocket rocket (aka my modified C2)
