Why would you want ALL the power from a cold engine anyway?

Where are you getting that from?

Shouldn't really be exceeding 3000rpm until the engine temperature needle starts to move
Then you can give it beans

Ironically, the handbook advises not to sit with the engine on idle from cold to allow it to warm

Every diesel I have had has always been low on performance until the engine block has warmed up, after all that is how an efficient diesel engine basically works

As for safety, I can't see how that can be relevant
The engine block is simply cold and heating up, and is less efficient

Petrol engines don't suffer this as much, all you are waiting for there is for the oil to fully warm to temperature

At least they are not hydraulic engines, then you really would be waiting for them to warm up!

I notice quite dramatic lack of power on a cold 1.9 engine almost as though it is just opening the waste gate as soon as there is any turbo spool. This lasts around 60 seconds (about the time I take to exit my small estate and reach the main road, by that time she is normal.

I too however run short shifts until there is full oil flow and a wee bit of heat in the engine to give her the benefit of the doubt
