sold car, but private plate still on

I wasnt gunna sell my car but a fella saw an old advert and offering really good price fair enough, but my car has a private plate on i want off. But the chap wants car asap. Ill go to dvla tommorow and pay retention fees etc.... but can he come with me, and sign as new owner at same time or....? Will i physically have to wait until the updated logbook comes back? How would you go about this. Thanks

well it may have changed but it states to hang on till you have got the v5 back as far as im aware if he contests the sale was with the plate inc you may lose the plate

Got to wait now. They won't do anything over the counter.

I sold my last car with the plate on and when the new docs came through got the new owner to send me them then did the transfer. Just got to trust they will do it really.

I went through this back in October last year. DVLA may request to see the car that the plates are changing from. It may be possible to give him the car with the private plate on it informing him the plate change will take place in about a week to 10 days and you would still have the plate on retention, but im not 100% sure.

i have seen peeps lose there plate because of this, sup it all depends what the plate is worth to you if you want to take the risk and sell it to him showing the guy the doc etc and saying you will forward the doc and new tax disc and mot when you get them back or tell him to come pick them up from you

Always change the plates over to the original ones before advertising for sale is my tip...

Sometimes the will send a new reg number out for the car though rather than keep the same reg number as I have had this happen before.

One way round is to highlight the point the fact that the private plates are not included in the sale, on the advert.
