No back boxes, just tail pipe, its quite a common mod.

There are many CDTi owner on here who have de catted and taken there back boxes off. Saying that, the MOT laws as of this year have changed in respect of that so you would have to look at the legality of that now, I know de catting on CDTi's is no longer allowed but not sure on taking the back boxes off.

No reason a diesel can't be decatted as they are not subject to a full emmisions test like a petrol

You are not allowed to remove a CAT from a vehicle that had one fitted as standard now though, it is not an emissions test but an inspection pick up.

As for the exhaust, just remove the back box and try different sized and shaped tips until you get the noise you want. If you have a pipe cut at a right angle to its length it will allow for best resonance. Get an exhaust place to make you some 45-90% bends to clamp onto the end of the exhaust where you removed the silencer with different amounts of pipe flaring. Then you can clamp them on and drive around to see how they sound. If you are not getting enough noise, you might need to remove and gut the large CAT in the centre as that seems to take most of the noise out in the CDTI exhaust.

Have a read of section 7.1

On vehicles that qualify for a full cat emissions test, check the presence of the catalytic converter.
