    a CDTI I take it?

removing the filter housing from the car is easy - remove the two fuel lines by releasing the blue clips, unclip the two electrical connectors (one at the top and on at the bottom - and then puch the housing up out of the bracket.

Where people struggle is undoing the filter housing to get the filter out. Its a screw top.. you will need to clamp the housing in a vice (or work mate between two blocks of wood) and then undo the top.

When re-assembling, make sure you get the top tightened down with the rubber seal nicely in place otherwise when you turn the ign on you will get diesel spurting out

Nah - they self bleed - just turn the ign on and off for 5 or so times for 3 - 5 seconds each before crancking it over.

Be very careful when releasing the fuel lines clips - they are very easily damaged and if you do damage them you have to replace the whole filter housing. Use two small screwdrivers, one either side to push in the spring clips and then pullout the pipes - easy enough but very fragile.

There are special tools you can buy - but if you clamp the bottom half of the housing in a vice you can unscrew the top - if your lucky by hand - but usually you need some sort of strap wrench or large grips to get it moving.

There is a special tool you can get to unscrew the lid http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fuel-Filte...mod%3D15075365
I suppose if you were doing a lot it might be worth getting one! You can improvise but the thing to remember is that the filter casing is made of a tough plastic that is quite brittle and you must treat it with kid gloves to prevent any damage especially the two fuel line connections - but easy enough to do and as already said no need to prime the system after fitting.
