Would i just use sand paper and black auto paint for my car or is their special sand paper? Do I have to sand bigger than the area to try and get a better match?

I think there's little chance you could do any repair that won't make it look worse than it is. If you don't have prior experience of spraying metal with rattle cans, then the roof isn't the place to start, and even a pro will have difficulty blending the new paint in with old.

The body is galvanised, so shouldn't rust. It may be the case that the roof has been repaired in the past and that's the cause of the rust. Either way, first get a quote from a "smart repair" company such as Chips Away, as they can fix just the damaged part of the roof and blend the repair with the existing paint, whereas a bodyshop will want to paint the whole roof because they'll say they can't blend it in. If the smart repair is less than you thought it would be, Bob's your uncle. If it's more than you thought and you still want to do a DIY job, then you need to practice spraying first. I'll do a search for any past threads that explain the painting process.

ok thanks will look into it. I assume that the last owner has used a roof rack and scraped the roof as the cover to the roof clips have scratches.
