Default What car to go for, max £4k

I've been looking at new cars recently and decided that whatever I get next needs to be petrol with a 1.6 engine ideally and no more than 7 years old.

Cars I have been looking at are:

    Astra H hatchback
    Focus hatchback

    and, as an odd ball

Volvo S40, kind of like the look of these

Any other suggestions or thoughts on what I am thinking of??

the new job I have means quite often I need to leave my car at services \ airports etc so don't want anything too flash or pricey

    cheers

Think you will find the Volvo's will be heavy and asking a lot from a 1.6 petrol, so wont be fast or economical.

If it isnt going to be your pride and joy, then something away from a Vauxhall or Ford, consider Nissan Almera, Toyota Auris, Mazda 3, sorry for saying this one but a Golf (shudder).

I actually paid less then £4k for my 2006 1.8VVT Design, which had 44K miles on it!!

    yeh, I wasn't sure how a 1.6 would cope in a Volvo

This car won't be my pride and joy, those days are gone for now. Just something to get me from a to b and big enough for a small family.

Ive seen an 08 plate mazda 3 for just under 4k with low miles but has been a cat d....

Not sure on price of them but an Audi A3 Sportback in petrol as it is not the most popular of engines. Plenty of space for a family.

Why dont you do a search on Autotrader with your price, age, engine size and mileage restrctions and see what comes up within a 40 mile radius??

Girlfriend was looking to change her car and it through up some really off the wall suggestions.

I wouldn't go for a German motor! If something goes wrong (which for £4k it will) you're looking at a hefty repair bill!
