Default Wont start most of the time (fixed)

    Hi,

Just so it may help someone else I have written what I did to fix a car that a dealer gave up on.

    It was a 2008 Vectra C 1.8

The car would mostly start if left for many hours but would not start immediately after first start on the key. However manually linking out the starter wire or pushing the car it would start fine.

After a few seconds of starting the gauges on the dash dropped, power steering failed and several other warning lights would illuminate.

After some messing with opcom it was obvious that the high speed can bus was falling down when the ignition was on, however with the switch in accessory position it would work. So I went around the various modules seeing which ones would not communicate. I found that the electro hydraulic pump would not communicate at all so I went to have a look. On disconnecting the multiplug from the pump unit I could see there was water damage on the connector and pins in the pump. So I cleaned it up got out the wd 40 gave it a squirt then packed the connector with silicone grease (used in satellite installs) to stop it happening again.

    Now all is well.

It seems that this is actually possible on any of the modules that get wet and would cause basically the same fault. (engine ecu, bcm,abs etc etc)

What a stupid idea it is to rely on a can bus to activate a starter motor!

    Phil

I had a similar with my power steering kept failing and then restarting itself until eventually stopped all together - I thought it was the alternator again but had replaced that a few weeks before. Like you I checked the big connector with heavy duty cables into the p/steering pump and found that the little plastic locking clips were missing and the whole plug in connection was loose, and the contacts dirty/corroded. Cleaned everything up, electric contacts, etc, sprayed with silicon grease, put it back together, making sure the connection cover was in place, and it has worked fine since. I did manage to use a cable tie to hold the plugs together and its pretty solid now.
