    Default Replacing track rods

    Hi chaps,

Had the parts delivered to replace both track rods (advisory on MOT due to play in joints).

Just jacked up the car and been looking at the Haynes, but the job looks more complicated than I thought. Mentions a "special tool" required. Anyone know what this is?

I'm no stranger to the spanners (done all the usual stuff before, springs, bushes etc) but this one looks a bit beyond me.

Anyone got any tips? Is it really as hard as it appears?

You will need to get the tracking re-done once you have changed the track rods.

If it's the track rod ends crack off the nut on the steering rack to track rod and take off the nut for the track rod end to front hub.

Get a big hammer and whack the metal part where the track rod goes through into the front hub the track rod end should just pop up/ down, a ball joint splitter is preferable but even us in workshops didn't use them often.

Once removed count the number of turns anti clockwise to remove say 14 and a half, then re fit with a little copperslip on threads.

Wheel alignment can be checked if it was not wearing the tyres before and you take it off correct amount of turns it may be fine left alone.

    Cheers for the replies guys.

In the end I just couldn't be bothered so called Formula One. They said it would be an hour labour to fit my parts so took it down there and... they told me there was nothing wrong with the old ones so I didn't bother!

****** Halfords Autocentres, going to take the car back to them and ask them to show me why they thought it was an advisory item.

The manager at Formula One told me that my tie rods were actually suprisingly sound for a Vectra of that age and mileage...

Problem now is that I've got to find another cause of the knocking noise when turning at low speed! (already replaced drop links)
