    Default Radio code!

I have an old corsa with the original grundig 200 radio in it, After having the battery off i can usually put the code in according to the manual, But this time it has gone straight into safe mode, Any ideas as i don't really want to buy another radio.

Try ebay. I paid 99p for a code. You must have the serial number off the stereo.

a lot of the older radios codes can be got from the serial number as the poster above states, so try your luck on ebay

actually, before you do, pm on its way.

Have you followed the correct procedure for entering the code?

Get into the recoding proceedure, (as per the handbook instructions), ie, turn ignition on, turn stereo off, hold down button AS and turn the stereo on. Wait until you get a beep and then release button AS. You'll then be presented with the word SAFE preceeded by a number (7 SAFE in your case). Depending on the number is how many attempts you have remaining and the waiting time before you can attempt entering the code. See table below.

Attempt 1 - wait 10 secs. (Display shows 10 SAFE)
Attempt 2 - wait 10 secs. (Display shows 9 SAFE)
Attempt 3 - wait 10 mins. (Display shows 8 SAFE)
Attempt 4 - wait 20 mins. (Display shows 7 SAFE)
Attempt 5 - wait 40 mins. (Display shows 6 SAFE)
    Attempt 6 - wait 80 mins. (1 hr 20 mins) (Display shows 5 SAFE)
    Attempt 7 - wait 160 mins. (2 hrs 40 mins) (Display shows 4 SAFE)
    Attempt 8 - wait 320 mins. (5 hrs 20 mins) (Display shows 3 SAFE)
    Attempt 9 - wait 640 mins. (10 hrs 40 mins) (Display shows 2 SAFE)
Attempt 10 - landfill. (Display shows 1 SAFE) ps, Re Landfill comment. Not really, but you would have to seek expert help to get it unlocked.

Once the waiting period is over (you MUST leave the ignition turned to position 1 & stereo switched on, otherwise you'll wait forever) the word CODE preceeded by the number of attempts should then show on the display. eg, 7 CODE.

Now enter the correct code. If you get it wrong again, the display will then say SAFE followed by one number lower than last time (and you'll have to wait however many minutes for it to time out again - see above table for waiting time)

press AS and turn the the stereo on while AS is still pressed in, when you see - - - - take your finger off AS, say your code was 4356 press number 1 4 times, number 2 3 times , you get the idea once you have entered code keep your finger on AS youll hear a beep and it will work
Making sure that you also have the key in the ignition, turned to position 1.

Tried as per hand book but it has never gone past 'safe', never get the chance to put the code in, my mate gave me another radio last night, same type but slightly better model 400 instead of 200 but thats the same not even going past safe??, got me stumped cos ive had the battery off before & had no problems putting the code in.

Check you have a live and ignition switched live at the stereo as it sounds like the ignition live fuse in the fuse box OR sometimes on the back of the stero when the plug goes in.

Hmmm, had a look & tested all terminals at the rear of radio (plug/block), The red's perm live but there's no switched live via ignition, although there is life at the radio/s ive tried (orig grundig 200+400,they light up), ive been given an old cd/radio & can only get it working by taking a switched live & adding it to the yellow in the plug/block, All wiring is untouched & orig from new (n rg) so i don't know if that's right but i only had the battery off so don't know why its like that unless that's how they are, also checked all fuses, So although i wanted to keep this old bus fairly original ive resorted to leaving this old cd player in for now, thanks for the suggestions folks.
