Post Excess play in both tie bars? Rear Brakes 95%!

    Hi all,

Took my car in for a recall and vauxhall had a nosey at my car. I was told that there is excess play in the tie bars, just wanted to ask what actually needs replacing. I was thinking that the tie rod ends, gator and obviously the tie rods, is that right and which brands should I use?

Also I was told that my rear brake pads where 95% worn, would it be worth changing the discs aswel? Would I need some type of fitting kit in addition ?

Hope someone can shed some light :-)

If the discs are not worn or scored, then just change the pads.

i would'nt take any notice of vauxhall mate , every time you take it in they will find something to get some coin out of you ... just tell em you know someone who will do the work cheaper then get a second opinion off a proper mechanic

Jack car up. Get someone to hold wheel at 6 and 9 o'clock position And rock wheel slightly.

Put your hand on tie bar gaitor and feel for and play. If you can feel and movement they need changing

Mate, as I said on another thread, I bought brand new tie-rods for my car but the garage I asked to fit them said there was nothing wrong with the old ones.

Mine are for a 2004 hatchback, if you need them and they are the same send me a PM and you can have them cheap.

Presumably they took the wheels off and this was a visual inspection only
The rear brake pads and discs are known to have a very poor life expectancy
Did they give you the measurements or let you see them?

If you are able, inspect the outer pad on each side
If you are able to see brake pad material, then they are fine
If you are stuggline to see brake pad material, then it may be getting near time to replace the pads

In general you can get two or three sets of pads to the discs
Inspect the discs, if there is severe lip on the outer edge then consider new discs, the additional cost is not that much (and vastly improves the performance)

If you have owned the vehicle for some time, keep a service record file, or look at the receipts to see when the rear pads / discs were last replaced

As above, take VX reports of brake pad wear with a BIG pinch of salt
I had a report "1000 miles left front brake pads", and 5000 miles later the brake pad sensor came on, and further 1000 miles later had the pads replaced
