    Default 2.2 Direct temp prob?

    Hi,

Just got a 2006 facelift 2.2 direct sri.

went out this morning and drove about 6 miles, then had a few stops to make in a town. noticed after a while the temp guage hadnt moved. Nice n warm through the heater.
anyway, lifted bonnet and top and bottom hoses were stone cold.
I squeezed them a few times and the temp guage came up to around 80. usually sits around 90.
anyway, carried on driving (stop start again) checked hoses again as guage was sticking at 80, and top was warm but bottom still stone cold.
drove some more and this time booted it a bit and the guage came up to 90 (normal). when I got back home (about 7 mile further) I rechecked hoses and bottom one was still cold. I reved engine for a couple of mins and temp guage suddenly dropped a little then started climbing back to norm (im guessing the thermostat had opened. Anyway now both hoses were warm.

    So what do you reckon?
Its been fine up to today, and it runs sweet

Yea, you did, thanks, just wanting a few more opinions

Can you explain why it would do this if it was the stat?

Hi, Whats the temperature outside - I live in Derbyshire and it was minus 12 yesterday - which will affect how long it takes for your engine to get up to full temperature. The systems are designed to provide warm air to the cabin heaters first and then the engine itself. Yours sound about normal to me. The symptoms of a faulty thermostat are zero reading on your temp gauge, which will climb to a reasonable temp, when stuck in slow moving traffic, or lengthy ticking over, and then return to zero when you get moving again - it will also rise at high speed running and again reduce down when back to normal speeds.Plus your cabin heater performance will be poor. If yours is getting up to 80 - 90 and staying there I wouldn't be too concerned and just keep an eye on it.

(The same alcutler from the kia forum??)

what worried me was the temp guage sat on zero until I squeezed the hoses, then climbed a little. It was about -5 yesterday

I got a 12 month warranty with the car so I could take it in.

Yea afraid so - we must have the same choice of motors
If its on warranty let them have a look and tell them your concerns - lay it on a bit and they may replace the thermostat for you. Its a big lump to warm up especially when its cold outside - probably just a coincidence that you got a reading as you squeezed the hose. I've got a 1.9cdti and I usually have to travel 6-7 miles before I get any reading on the temp gauge, although the heaters in the car are a lot quicker. Good luck with it and speak soon. Got to get back to the Kia forum to try and sort my Sedona EML
