Roads down my end look whiter than previous winters, got weekend off this weekend, but as I had "chips away" work on my car on Friday I can't wash it until at least Monday

It depends on what they are using and where they are sourcing it from
It also depends on the weather conditions as well as the difference in routes you use

Local Authorities tend to use a sand based salt
The Highways Agency (and their contractors) tend to use a high grade grit that breaks up as vehicles pass over it

The main issue is that rain washes it away, so the process has to be started all over again

Here in Scotland they have been using a lighter sand based grit
However it is extremely corrosive and cannot be used on certain sections of road
In these locations a liquid based anti-freeze has to be used

I did a throttle body clean on my car yesterday and couldn't believe the amount of grit that was sitting on the panel just below the a/c radiator...

They also add something called molasses which makes the salt/grit stick to everything it comes into contact with.

They mix in some sort of liquid round here, brine and sugar i think

It saves peoples lives so we should not moan too much

Must say round here they have been really good, even got a mini gritter going round the housing estates
