    Default Unexpectedly low MPG

    Hi,

I used to have a 2.0 DTI that used to average about 55mpg on the motorway doin about 75mph.

I got rid of that as i didnt need the car when i moved to London.

I now need one and have all the old connections for my Sony head unit so figured id buy another vectra c only this time i went for the 2.2 DTI.

I understand that its a larger engine shifting the same weight so the mpg would be lower but im only getting about 43mpg on the motorway....

Parkers is telling me i should get 60mpg on the motorway so id expect it to be at least 50mpg in a real world setting.....not 43mpg.

Anyone have an idea of what it could be?

    Thanks,

    Rich

usual suspects. Tyre pressures, fuel filter, air filter (mine looked like an owl lived in there)...and of course cold weather doesn't help

    Vehicle : Focus

    Trim : Titanium

    Engine : 1.6 TDCI

    Year : 62

    Mileage : 9K

Just compleated a 170 mile trip today. Mostly motorway and 40 mile dual carridgway. Set computer before i left home.

    Average consumption 59.5mpg

Sat 90% of the journey with speedo on 68mph on cruise control.

    Other 10% was A roads.

Keeping your speed down below 70mph helps,as does cruise control.

Also as said, tyre pressures. Mine at 37psi all round.

Oil and filter changed yesterday, done at every 5k.

Air, fuel, pollen filter done every year.

Check all the above and treat her gently.

    thanks for the advice.

As an attempt at a quick fix, ive bought some redex to see if its clogged injectors.

I wont be able to change oil/fuel filter until im down south (currently in london).

I have tried to get the airbox open (and succeeded with my 2.0DTI) but i can seem to remove the cover on this one.

Any tricks ive forgotten? are the clips on the left (as you look at the engine) of the airbox infact a hinge and not removeable?

My airbox has a hinge on the left with a few torque screws holding it down around the outside. So once you remove the torques you cna lift up the cover then remove from the hinge.
