Default Another Dual Mass Flywheel Thread!

I have a rattle coming from the right side of the engine bay (battery side) when the engine is idling. I haven't noticed a rattle when depressing the clutch which seems to be a syptom. Could this still be my DMF or something else?

    Thanks.

How long do you think I have before I need to get it changed? What are the consequences of not getting it changed?

It would be hard to say. As many people will tell you they've had over 20k with it rattling with no other problems.

Most wait for clutch to go and get them done together.

Their is the risk over extra vibrations damaging the crank shaft. But id say it's not something to particularly worry about.

I've heard of one damaging a gearbox before, but thats very rare, mine has ratteled for about 20k miles, however it caused a weird vibration recently so i'll be changing it rather soon.

The longer you leave it the more chance the rubber gets to break up which can then damage the starter aswell.

Well, for the first time yesterday, I heard what sounds to me like the start of the DMF death rattle in my 1.9 CDTi. Sitting at the traffic lights, in neutral, foot fully off the clutch pedal, switch on the Air Con and with the extra load on the engine, a rattle. The rattle is clutch related because as soon as I dipped the clutch to the floor, rattle stopped and as soon as I lifted my foot off, rattle appears. Also this morning with lights on, I could detect a slight rattle. Seems more prominant when engine is under load.

Start saving & shop around... you will get a better quote from a clutch specialist rather than an independant garage, forget the dealers unless you're happy being butt shafted
