Default Which Derv lump is best?

    Hey all,

The wife has decided that with the imminent arrival of child number three the Astra VXR needs to go and a big sensible car needs to replace it. She quite likes my Vectra so is giving serious consideration to swapping up to the bigger car. The issues I have is she wants a diesel and there is just to many types available in the Vectra…

We previously had a 1.9 120 Astra so I know the plus and negative points of this and the 16v 150 variant of the same engine size… namely: EGR, Swirl flaps, turbo failure, DMF, alternator etc (mainly as they all went wrong on the Astra we had). I know next to nothing about the 2.0, 2.2 and the 3.0 v6 lumps…

I spent the better part of 2 hours looking through posts on all the diesel engines and know all seem to have issues but I could not find a definitive guide to all the engines together to allow me to compare them…

Ideally I would like to know what is the pros and cons of each engine, what to look out for on each engine, what the mpg and insurance is like on each engine and what the power is like.

Chances are I will use my EDS IPF to remap it also so would be interested to know peoples thoughts on this…

Any and all feedback on the engines is welcome…

    Thanks
    Colin

What about zafira 1.9 they can keep any mods the Astra has.

I voted v6 but problem being part are ****** expensive for it. And not many garages no about the engine

I've got the 1.9 120 club... Cheap and economical for a family and commute hack. I will happily admit that I am considering a remap/tuning box for a bit more grunt.

    I pay 600 a year for insurance, 33, 10 years NCB.

I do in excess of 350 miles a week, which costs about £50.

Does the trick for me, and if and when I remap, I should get about the 150 power without the swirl valve issues.

I would however go for an elite or sri trim next time just for things like obc and partial/full leather but it doesn't bother me that much.

I had wondered about that with the v6... As for a zaffie... She would hit me if i sugested that... She seems to have a serious issue with people carriers and fords...

I think the thing which worries me about the 120 is the fact we had one before and it had loads of issues... With the EDS map on it it was pushing 170 bhp at the rolling road.... Mental power... prehaps that's why it ate turbos and the DMF?

    Aren't 120 Astra's still the 16v unit (ala 150), while the 120 Vectra's are the 8v engine?

I guess not many will vote for the 3.0 as, compared to the 1.9's, there are ain't many of us on the forum .
