    Default thermostat

    hi all

car temp gauge barely lifting off 80% when driving, left sitting idling it will climb until driving again then will drop rapidly, i am assuming this is the symptoms of a stuck open thermostat, now i know they are a right pig to do on the 3.2 v6 vec-c but have someone with the experience to do it but im just wondering what to buy??? just the stat £12 or this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2904461744...84.m1423.l2649

i have heard that the moulding can break when trying to remove so would option 2 be better to buy or has it got to be from vx ???

Given the ambient temperature I'd say there's not a lot wrong really. If the stat was stuck open you'd be lucky to get the temp guage over 70 in normal driving at the moment.
If you have any worries just keep monitoring it for the moment and once we get sensible daily temperatures again any fault will be more apparent.

It will be quicker and easier and cheaper to change just the thermo as the temp sensor wire is a ****** nightmare to get off if you decide to go for that option you will get a small type cardboard tube press that down and turn to release the old stat then its same when fitting new mine works like a dream now

    your thermostat needs replacing

i changed the thermostat and the needle stays at 87 to 89 and stays there it should not move.

when you put the heater on it drop just a tad to 86

when you are in traffic it may rise to 92 then back to 89 once you start moving again
my thermostat broke at 53000 miles fixed now because i was getting bad mpg

the classic sign of a faulty temperature gauge is

it sits at 0 for ages, moves up to 80 then drops back to 0 again

ive had a new thermostat fitted now its better on mpg heats up quicker

diesel} takes around 6 miles to get to 86 -87 and the needle stays there

{ petrol} takes around 3 miles to get to 87-89 and the needle stays there

depending on weather outside say 6 degrees and speed doing

if you turn your heater on and the needle falls back to 70 to 75 its broke
    i know because mine broke

Ah... yes, slight difference. 80 wouldn't be a huge problem given the current ambient temperatures.... 70 however, as Ste has pretty much covered, would be getting me concerned.

    thermostat test
    1.8 petrol

i did a test today starting from a cold start
the temperature showing in the car for outside was 6 degrees
i set my mileage counter to zero and started off driving
please note my heater is in the off position

    it took 3 miles for
the needle to rise up and stays at 87 to 89 and stays there

there is movement of the needle if you put your heater on setting 4
but this goes to around 83 to 85

if the needle is between 70-75 you need a new thermostat

hope this helps because i replaced mine when it broke
    the cabin gets hotter
    mpg is better as well

Here's a tip to get the engine up to temperature quicker.

Don't put the heater on in the car until you see the needle rising as all you're doing is taking out what little heat is being generated.

Let the engine warm up a bit before demanding any warmth from the heater.

If I put the heater on when I set off for work in the morning (6 mile journey) then the engine temp only gets up to 80 deg max. However if I wait until the needle starts to rise (within 2 miles of the journey) before I put on the heater then within 4 miles it's fully up to temperature.
