Default PO409 exhaust gas recirculation "A" circuit

I have the above fault code on my vectra (Y30DT engine code). I'm not certain what sensor this referes to. At first i thought it was most likely the egr possition sensor on top of the egr valve but the more i learn the less convinced i am of that. Anyone know what sensor this is likely to be and it's location?
I know many egr's are monitored by DPFE sensors, does our engine have a DPFE or is it monitored in some other way?

P040x codes point to an EGR problem. I give the car a good italian tune up i.e. redline through the gears and not only once.

Does the car smoke black? When mine went I could turn a bright Summer's day into darkness

Thanks but the egr valve is free, ive also energised it and watched it moving. Ive tested the egr position sensor (on top of the egr valve) this is simply a potentiometer and also looks fine.
Egr flow is normally monitored in some way eg PDFE sensor, i'm wondering whether the code refers to this?
