1.9cdti Diesel fumes inside the cabin

I found it is common for the Opel diesel engines, however i did not found solution of this problem.

1) Car running good and have full power
2) At some point cooling fan of engine heat exchanger start, this causing much fumes to come up from the engine compartment. No any fumes visible in engine compartment unless cooling fan running
3) Starting of the cooling fan come with increased fuel consumption as per BC (on standby 3-4 l/h from normal 0.8 l/h)
3) Cooling fan do not stop even if outside temp is -10C, and water temp drop below 70C, max observed is 90C
4) Trouble code indication come up on dashboard. However the report from OPCOM only says:

5) Fumes and increased fuel consumption stopped if you turn off/on engine

So maybe the fumes are from the flex exhaust pipe, but why the fuel consumption increasing.

I'd be opting for changing the coolant thermostat and getting the flexi pipe checked. Looks like two seperate problems. Thermostat = Cooling fan on and poor fuel consumption because the engine isn't running at fuel temp. Fumes from the flexi pipe

Look at fuel filter at back of engine. Ime had a hose go and smelt horrendus!

The fumes coming from the foreword part after the cooling fan, and move aft along the charger belt. Till now I was unable to locate the exact place. Now I`m equipped with flashlight so next time I hope to find out. For the last week it come only once when the outside temperature rise up above 0C, and I drive a longer distance.

I notice that in normal condition (without fumes/no error code on dashboard) fan start running even at 73C (outside temp 0C).

I have the same problem on my 1.9cdti ,2006.When temp goes over 88ºc the fan kicks in(which is normal)but after a few seconds i have alot of fumes smell in the cabine and can see fumes coming from the engine.If i switch off the engine and switch it on again it stops leting off fumes.
Has anyone expereinced the same on the car and what was the problem.?

ribeird, if it is exhaust type fumes,try electrically disconnecting your EGR valve for a couple of weeks and see if the smell reduces or goes away completely (although not recommended if your car has a DPF). If it does, it could be a blocked EGR or worn swirl valves within the inlet manifold which is venting the re-circulating exhaust gas into the air under the hood. When disconnected, the EGR will trigger the EML dash light but will be reset to not illuminated after a period of normal driving with it connected.

Problem solved.


O-ring between Turbo and Catalytic converter. If you suffer this should have some soot around the exhaust manifold steel plate.

The increased fuel consumption on idle is happening because your car probably has a DPF - diesel particulate filter - which needs to clean itself (it's called DPF regeneration) every 1000 Km or so. DO NOT stop the engine while this is happening because the DPF will not clean itself. Instead you should drive the car at 3000 rpm until the regeneration is complete (about 10 minutes). While driving you should see a fuel consumption about 2 times higher then normal. While this happends fumes are much more noticeable and they get inside the cabin while standing still.
