Default Help! Oil Overfilled by Kwik Fit, Advice needed!

    Hello All,
I had an oil change done at kwik fit 3 months ago (since done 2000 miles) on my 2007 vectra 1.8vvt. Today, the emissions warning light illuminated, which has never happened before. i checked the oil level (first time since the change) and noticed it is above the max level and approx 5 inches up the "wire" part of the dipstick!!!!!!
Could this be the cause of the emissions warning and could the overfill have caused any damage to the engine?
Any advice what my best course of action would be? should i take it back to kwik fit or would it be better to have a vauxhall dealer take a look first? Obviously if kwik fit are to blame then i want them to pay to put things right!

To be honest mate I think 3 months down the line is too late to be going back with this sort of thing. Give it a try by all means but I can't see you getting anywhere.

did u clean and recheck the dip stick a few times, oil can splash up from the engine running, happened on mine the other day... It would cause the emissions light to come on, not sure what it would do on a petrol engine (plasma dont do petrol) but on diesel engines it can be very dangerous. It would probably just get over the top of the pistons and burn it off as blue smoke?
Plasma's Tech2 services are now open and able to provide services

I agree, 3 months without checking the oil level could be deemed as a failure of "Basic Checks" by yourself. Proving otherwise wouldn't get very far due to the time lapse from service to checking.

I'd see about getting the oil drained, measure the quantity to see how much overfill there is, then refill with fresh oil.

Yeah the dipstick was cleaned several times (on level ground with engine off for several mins).
I assumed the oil level would be correct following the oil change so i have had no cause to check it untill the emissions light came on, I couldnt believe my eye's when i saw how far up the dipstick the oil level is showing!
do you think the emissions light will go off if i get kwik fit to drain the excess oil? or is it likely that some damage has occured? I am absolutely fuming with kwik fit right now!

IF the oil was 5 inches up the dipstick, im pretty sure you'd of known about it a lot less than 2000 miles ago!

if its overfilled that much with oil, you'd know almost immediately as the oil gets sucked up into the bores and it smokes like hell.

i haven't notice any smoking at all and it's definately 5 inches up the dipstick (difficult to see because the oil is so clean/honey coloured)....

Lesson learnt though!! Check oil level at least once a week.

    Is all other levels ok?

Surely 5" up the dipstick would mean a full sump?? That would make one hell of a noise as the crankshaft went splashing around in it. Not sure you could even drive a car with that much oil in it without any massive signs of something wrong
