confused 1.8 sri OVER HEATING PROB....

    hi everyone,
i drive a 2006 1.8 16v vvt sri nav vectra with 147k on it which ive been having on going over heating problems with.
a few months back i noticed steam coming from under the bonet so i stopped and had a look and seen that water was coming out of the expansion bottle and a glonking noise coming from the rad and stat housing.
i thought it was the water pump so i changed it but it happened again,
i then took the stat out of its housing to see if it would make a difference as i know an engine can run ok without the stat.
well it worked, but with the stat out i thought that the engine would run cooler but the temp gauge still always reads 90.
now just today, 2 months later i notice the coolant temperature light flashing and the temp gauge was through the roof so i stoppped and the coolant level in the expansion bottle was at the cap with some coming out.
i let it cool down and took it to a local garage and asked for a sniff test but they didnt have one but had an emisions reader and they opened the exspansion bottle and held the reader over it and its reading HYDROCARBONS of over 140 parts per million,
he said its likely to be the head gasket,
    IS HE RIGHT????
might get a second opinion but their is nearly 150k on the car as i drive it as a taxi,
    MIGHT IT BE THE HEAD??
im going to do a compression test, wet and dry, tomorrow just to see what it says and see if it helps pin point the problem.
    all advice is welcome

    THANKS

Id pretty much agree with the garage. Did you feel the bottom radiator hose just in case the water pump has failed?

Also possible that the radiator itself is blocked and why hasnt the electric cooling fan no kicked in??

Its possible the overheating has popped the head gasket.

Possibility that the head gasket has gone now.

But the original cause of p we heating will still be their I think.

Was the flow of water ok? Rad ok?

    Angry

    hi everyone,
thanks for the replies and im just getting back to them now,
i have been driving the car from this happen 2 days ago, it seems fine now, got up the secret menu and the fan is kicking in at 108 then drops the temp to 99 when sitting idle,
when driving it goes lower still,
another garage told me to fit a new thermostat and see how it goes as their is no oil mixing with water or vice versa,
the engine is not missfiring either,
do you think i should try this????
ive totalled up the cost of doing the head gasket with the help of a friend =

head preasure tested and skimmed if needed plus new valve stem seals fitted and the head gasket and all the seals and gaskets nedeed supplied = 195,
    new head bolts = 22,
new GATES timing belt kit = 65,
    new thermostat = 80,
    new crankshaft oilseal = 13,
    new expansion bottle = 24,
    new antifreeze = 5,
labour cost and a well desevered drink lol = 100,

    grand total of £504

it could be worse but still a lot,
the water flow is fine and so is the rad,
do you's think i should try the new stat first,

does anyone know what the normal range reading for hydrocarbons is from the expansion bottle???????
vaux stealers wont tell me,, RRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

A new thermostat is about £12 as you only need the thermostate itself and not the whole body as well.

Fan should be kicking in a lot quicker than 108 Id have though. Mine kicks in around 92-93(on the dashboard). Wonder if the radiator needs flushing out? You mention fitting a new stat, but I though you were running without the stat in place?

Mine 's a Dec 08 SRi VVTi and at its first MOT the HC was recorded at 1 ppm/vol.
I guess that'll be from the exhaust emission test but maybe you should get the exhaust emissions read to see how it compares. Mines got 39000 on the clock.

Hope it helps. I still think you've a Head gasket issue.
