i drive a 2006 1.8 16v vvt sri nav vectra with 147k on it which ive been having on going over heating problems with.
a few months back i noticed steam coming from under the bonet so i stopped and had a look and seen that water was coming out of the expansion bottle and a glonking noise coming from the rad and stat housing.
i thought it was the water pump so i changed it but it happened again,
i then took the stat out of its housing to see if it would make a difference as i know an engine can run ok without the stat.
well it worked, but with the stat out i thought that the engine would run cooler but the temp gauge still always reads 90.
now just today, 2 months later i notice the coolant temperature light flashing and the temp gauge was through the roof so i stoppped and the coolant level in the expansion bottle was at the cap with some coming out.
i let it cool down and took it to a local garage and asked for a sniff test but they didnt have one but had an emisions reader and they opened the exspansion bottle and held the reader over it and its reading HYDROCARBONS of over 140 parts per million,
he said its likely to be the head gasket,
IS HE RIGHT????
might get a second opinion but their is nearly 150k on the car as i drive it as a taxi,
MIGHT IT BE THE HEAD??
im going to do a compression test, wet and dry, tomorrow just to see what it says and see if it helps pin point the problem.
all advice is welcome
