Default Carb cleaner while engine running

Hi guys, has anyone tried to spray Carb cleaner into intake while engine is running on a 3.2L?

We used to do this to our 3.5L Mitsubishi's in Oz. It would clean the whole intake out and the gunk of the valves. The engine would sound nicer and run better after this clean.
It would want to stall while you spray it in but you just keep the revs up.

    Anyone?

Have a look on the can - you'll see (in the case of Wynn's anyway) that it's meant to be used this way as well.

In the good old days of carbs, we used to use the cleaner more for getting oil and dirt off the carb itself, and for cleaning out the internal channels and jets. Plus a blast down the intake to shift any dirt from the inside of the inlet manifold and back of the valves.

Now most brands have renamed the product to 'intake cleaner', as there aren't so many cars with carburettors any more. And there's naff all in a fuel injected car's throttle body that requires that level of cleaning. Plus modern engines run a lot cleaner anyway...

Be careful spraying it down the intake on a diesel though - it can lead to runaway, which if you've ever seen it happen, is a very bad thing!

Diesel runaway happens when a diesel engine starts running on it's own engine oil rather than diesel from the injectors. Once it's going - it'll just get faster and faster until it either seizes or puts a conrod through the side of the block. Usual causes are too much oil in the sump, or a diesel leak into the sump (from a mechanically driven fuel pump, less likely on modern common-rail diesels), or a leaky injector dribbling diesel in all the time. Effectively oil droplets find their way up the breather system and into the intake - giving a nice mix of fuel and air independent of the fuel injectors.

Turning off the ignition switch won't achieve anything, as it's no longer running on diesel from the injectors. If you're a bit over enthusiastic with carb cleaner on a running diesel, you can rev it to the point at which it starts churning the oil in the sump enough to spit droplets up the breather pipe.

Some good videos on Youtube - for example: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zx3qKX_Pno"]Runaway Diesel Defender 200 TDI - YouTube[/ame]
