Default 1.9cdti 150 juddery on cold start

For some time now, the veccy has made a belt/pump pulsing/whining noise when its cold (I mean cold engine & cold ambient temperature). It's not very loud (can only be heard from the front drivers wheel arch) and goes away after a few miles. Recently, along with this noise there's been a lot of smoke on cold start up, the idle revs wobble and the engine really judders (so much sometimes that the entire car is shaking)! Once warmed up its fine! There are no probs pulling thorough the rev range, no loss of power or limp mode etc..

I read that the judders and smoke could be the glow plugs so have replaced them but to no avail. The car is a 57plate 1.9 CDTI 150 so already has the updated inlet manifold and injector wiring. It was serviced 7 months ago, the EGR was replaced at the same time and has been blanked ever since (but not mapped out so the EML is on).

We generally only do short trips of 3-4 miles in the car but this past week or so, I've done 3 or 4 longer motorway trips if that makes any difference.

I can't take it to a garage as the nearest one I trust is over 30 miles away by which point the engines warmed up and symptoms have subsided so any ideas would be greatly received. cheers.

Is this the engine slowly eating itself? Anything I can do to remedy the problem?

What colour is the smoke at startup?
Are you consuming any engine oil? May be hard to tell if you're not doing many miles.
Might be worth removing the blank from your EGR temporarily to make sure you don't have other faults.

    Sounds like a sticking injector.

I'll check the smoke this morning (fairly sure it's grey). I checked the oil and it seems to stay fairly stable. as the engine warms up there's often a feint smell of warm coolant but it's not losing any so I dunno if that's just normal.

If tht is the case, how would I know which injector is sticking? Is it a part that's repairable or would it need replacing?

Perhaps get the coolant system pressure tested?

Are any fault codes stored or have you got them read?

Could be the MAF giving a false reading when cold air passes over it or ambient air temperature sensor or...... the list could go on. Without an idea of fault codes it's hard to point to a specific cause.

Sorry, not much help I know .

How would I go about reading codes without a code reader? Or is that not possible?

I also have this problem. I have only recently bought the car. It doesn't always happen but mostly from overnight - cold start. The smoke is grey/white. I had this sort of problem on my BMW 330 ci - hunting a bit on cold start. But I bought some BG44k injector cleaner and it seemed to have sorted the problem.

I also only do short journeys normally: I do a 6 mile journey to work and back or a 15 mile journey from work to Uni and back etc. The engine oil level is fine as is the coolant level.. Just a blocked injector?
