Could be or the EGR valve needs a clean, I am sure some of the Diesel heads will be along to help.

This is just what I have picked up from reading countless threads about misbehaving diesels....

Check the door piller on the drivers side and look in the bottom right hand corner for the following 1.30 for DPF not present and 0.8 for DPF present. If your car isn't an automatic it may not have a DPF best to check first

Sounds very much like a DPF regeneration - I think most 1.9 Estates have DPFs as it's something to do with tax on company vehicles.
paulhb, you probably know better than me, but I thought it was 1.20 for no DPF fitted and 0.50 for DPF fitted?
If you have a DPF, then the regen cycle works on a differential pressure sensor which is basically looking for a restriction of exhaust gas across the DPF (the section of the exhaust which is collecting particulates from your exhaust gases). When the restriction is high, it forces a regeneration (a late additional post injection which uses more fuel).
Also, from what I understand, it can also be triggered by some sort of equation within the ECU which takes into account journey duration and miles completed - could be wrong on this one!
Either way, I don't think it's unusual to see this every couple of fuel tank refills.

Thanks for the help DieselWig and paulhb, I think you may be right DieselWig as my car does have 0.50 on the door piller I'm glad to hear that this can be common because I had a nightmare with the dpf in my lump of s*** laguna just took a differant route home from work with a little motorway run so that should help a little

You are right mate for the 150 but on some 120 models they had different numbers (in my post) and the OP has a 120 but at least the numbers tally to show he a DPF and that it is the likely cause
