Default Suspension Knocking BUT MOT Pass!!

    Hi to all

My 2006 facelift Veccy SRi vvt passed it's MOT yesterday, with no advisories

Before it went in to my local trusted garage, I asked the mechanic to have a good look at the rear suspension as I've been experiencing a knocking noise when driving on uneven roads.

On collecting the car, he told me that no faults were evident and that the car had passed with flying colours.

I've had a search through the various other threads re rear suspension problems, and I thought that any worn shockies, bushes or links etc would fail the MOT or at the very least be an advisory.

I should add that there's no abnormal tyre wear and the car handles fine; also the wheel bolts are tight, there are no loose items in the boot, the toolkit & jack are secure, the tailgate shuts snug against the bodywork, both rear seat uprights are secured, and the exhaust is not hitting the rear of the car.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Is it defo a suspension knock, could it not be the exhaust or heat shield, or some trim making the noise?

It can be hard to replicate the movement of a suspension component when on ramps (unless the garage has one of those new machines for testing them).

Hi Dan yes it's defo a suspension knock. Before putting the car in for it's test yesterday, I spent most of the weekend eliminating everything else I could think of, including exhaust & trim, in case it was something obvious.

The upper control arms on the Vec C/Signum can only be properly checks with the car on the ground and anti roll bar bushes may look fine but can still cause knocking.

Another thing to check is that the boot is closing properly

I recently replaced (at 64K miles) all four coil springs and shock absorbers after one front spring broke. Ever since I've had the car (at 14K miles), the rear would jolt and be quite noisy when going over holes in the road, even though nothing wrong was ever found during services and MOTs. I'm convinced that the original rear shock absorbers were the problem, as with new Monroe ones fitted, the suspension is smooth and quiet.
