Default fast idle speed on cold start (1.9cdti)

Just started the car today and noticed a whining sound accompanied with a high idle speed. It's like having an old fashioned choke pulled right out. Took it round the block and it is still the same. It is running just above 1000rpm and doesn't sound right

OK so I have just been back out and started it. Idle has settled to normal but it struggled slightly to start. Lights went off the dash for a split second....this is looking like electrical and possibly the alternator. I have had no problems and the battery light has never come on though

Jesus I have had a bellyful of this car now. I have already had an alternator replaced under warranty (along with loads of other things) and now I'm out of warranty. Good job I have AA breakdown repair cover if the worse was to happen

Is there still enough juice to light up the headlights? Do they dim or go out when you try and start the car?

Well AA bloke diagnosed a knackered alternator. The car is now in my local garage and claim being settled on my AA breakdown repair cover. All I am paying is the £25 excess. That cover is well worth the £75 per year.

Make sure its a proper Vauxhall alternator as badly reconditioned ones can cause problems.
