    Default friends broken corrolla

Not actually my car, but I'm hoping someone may be able to shed some light. I have a friend with a 1.4 2000 reg Toyota Corolla (engine 4ZZ-FE)

The other day she started it, it ran for a few seconds, then cut out! Read the DTC's and it pinged up "P0170 (Fuel trim (FT), bank 1 - Malfunction". It turns over ok, occasionally sounds though it tries to fire, but won't. when cranked you can smell a faint trace of petrol at the exhaust.

I cleared the fault code, but it still won't start and the code has not re-appeared.

I'm not familiar with these engines, any ideas what should I be checking for/looking to fix or replace?

I would check the fuel filter, fuel pump first to se if you are getting fuel to the injection system.

It doesnt have a single coil pack, rather separate coils on each plug, so I find it unlikely that they've ALL failed at exactly the same time!

Try cranking it over, then take a plug out, see if its wet? If not, probably petrol fault?
