Hi-Fi Illumination Fault HELP!!!

My latest facelift Vectra SRi 1800vvt is displaying a very annoying problem, which has occured since early today; hopefully someone can point me towards a solution.

The CD30 hi-fi illumination does not work at all. Also, the central display screen (non sat-nav) does not show any hi-fi (radio presets, cd tracks etc) settings; however it does scroll through the trip computer functions okay, from the steering wheel controls.

When I switch the hi-fi on (ignition logic disabled), I can switch between the radio and the inserted cd, and all the buttons appear to work (volume, radio presets, etc), however the hi-fi steering wheel buttons do not work.

I've only had this car a few days, and when I test-drove it prior to (private) purchase, everything was working fine.

Apart from trying all the settings, the only other thing I've used on the car is the 12 volt socket beside the gear lever to vacuum the front footwells.

I am aware that early CD30 units could play up, however I've done a forum search and can't find any with similar problems to mine.

Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE

After much head scratching, I decided to disconnect the battery; waited 15 minutes, reconnected and hey presto!!!! Everything now working as it should: hi-fi, display screen, & steering wheel controls.

I assume that disconnecting the battery has somehow 'reset' the unit? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Only 1 thing, when starting the car after reconnecting the battery, the first twice the starter just made a loud clicking noise; the third attempt it cranked slowly then fired up.

Took the car for a decent run, everything working fine. A slight flicker from the headlights when turning the steering; I know that the car has an electric steering system, however is the flicker normal?

Personally I think it is differcult to say. A little bit of flicker I think is normal on the vectras but it is it significant it may point to the battery or the alternator.... My headlights have flickered badly for about a year now if that reassures you.....
