2.2 DTI Glow Plug Disaster

Well what a day i have had.....
I went to change my glowplugs this morning and two of them were a piece of cake the other two however are now snapped off in the head

To add insult to injury i attempted to drill them out, one i had a go with a stud extractor which is now broken off inside it and the other has half a drill bit in it so this thread is quite rightly titled glow plug disaster!!!!

Im now faced with the concept of re drilling them and having to drill into hardened steel! or removing the head and having a go from the other side!

Any ideas would be great because i'm all out!

ouch. is drilling a centre hole, reverse tapping a thread and then inserting a reverse thread bolt to use as a turning tool, an option???

Oh and i cant drive it because i'm loosing compresion from the right side cylinder through the remains of the plug that has half a drill bit in it!!!

i guess, i was going to try and drill out the body of the plug and also drill out the theaded part then tap a thread into the remains of the plug and then use a nut and bolt as a puller, if you get what i mean!!

You will probably find the stud extractor isnt hardened steel and neither will be the broken drill bit, unless you sed a cobalt drill bit?

if you search google for sheared glowplug there are sites with instructions to get them removed.

Just a couple of quick questions?Did you try to remove the plugs from a warm or cold engine..?Did you spray the GPs before removal,mine need doing and this is the reason i keep putting the job off.

U should warm the engine then spray with loads of wd40 leave to soke then remove them

Yep the engine was cold, first mistake lol i did the wd 40 thng tho and still no joy.
Cheers for the vid but with mine its the whole plug body thats siezed in and i got a drill bit in one and ahlf an easy out in the other. I think im gonna have to start with trying to drill out the hardened steel which is going to be a mission in its self!!

The problem with drilling is if you go too far and break through all the swarf and crud will fall straight into your cylinders. If you use a small punch and keep tapping the broken drill and easy out they may eventually come loose and you will be able to pick them out. Go gently though and it depends how much access you have. Not much use now but when I did mine I sprayed them every night for a week with releasing oil before attempting to undo them - a right pain but I was a bit paranoid.
Try a couple of local garages and ask them what they would do - they may have contact with a local mobile repairer who will come out to you.
Alternative is to get the head off - good luck with it.
