It MAY be becasuse the outside temp is too low. It's won't activate below a temperature (which I can't remember right now)

Isn't it a bit cold for needing air con?

Air con is for use all year round, not just for summer. That's why so many AC systems go wrong - because they're not used in winter and the seals dry out thus letting the gas escape.

If the AC is used in conjunction with the heater, it makes for an excellent demister.

Cars with climate control run the AC all year round - unless you go into the settings menu and switch it off, which is pointless IMHO.

So do I need to replace the whole compressor or is there such a thing as a clutch repair kit??
Where is the best place to get a new compressor or clutch for it?

John.Robertson priced a clutch plate for his old Vec, sure it was £400!!! Cheaper picking up a secondhand compressor of ebay or a breakers yard.

Yes, I am aware of the occasional use of AC during the winter, and also that it works as a demister (less humidity in the air = quicker drying) BUT it won't engage belowe a certain ambient temp. So maybe there is nothing wrong, and it is just too cold for it to work anyway?
Also, running it all the time will increase fuel consumption.
