Exclamation Diesel burning ! ! ! Black smoke !!! Car clonked out!!

I gave my Vectra CDTI 150 to my Local garage for a service ( Oil, Oil Filter, Fuel Filter )

I drove the car today and I could smell diesel fuel through my vents. I came to stop the car and it clonked out on me, with heaps of black smoke and a burning smell coming from the bonnet. I thought the car had caught fire. I opened the bonnet to see the fuel filter spewing diesel all over the engine and onto the exhaust.

Called the AA OUT, AA guy told me the Fuel filter pipe was not connected properly. The car would not start after many attempts and I lost a whole HALF A TANK OF DIESEL as the DIESEL LIGHT had come ON. I had the car towed to the Garage. The car reeks of the diesel the aa guy told me the cars a fire hazard due to having diesel on the exhaust and that it could burn the car due to it becoming hot. THE engine mangement was on and when it did start for a 10 seconds the engine mangement light stayed on

I want to know what you guys think I should ask the garage to do to put the car right and what else could have been affected by this? THE AA GUY SAID THEY MAY REFUSE IT ALL TOGETHER. COULD ANY OTHER PROBLEMS OCOUR AND WHAT I SHOULD DO TO SORT IT... I DONT WANT TO BE SMELLING DIESEL FOR MILES ON END..... BESIDE AN ENGINE CLEAN WHAT ELSE OR HOW???

Yep agree garage should put it right, they should also compensate for loss of fuel and also give the engine etc a dam good steam clean.

Probably needs a good steam clean, a decent amount of fuel in the tank and then a restart should be attempted, Diesel vecs dont like low fuel on restart if they've conked out due to lack of fuel in the first place, something to do with the high pressure fuel rail cant build up enough pressure to fire up.

    Thumbs up

Thanks guys for all the replies.

I was thinking of asking them to steam clean the engine including bonnet interior shield, the fabric which protects the inner engine. All shields at the bottom steam wash from below and give the a hole valet and compensate for fuel.

Do you guys think anything else could have been affected i.e any other parts or damage elsewhere I should keep an eye out for?

I am lucky from what the aa could see no fuel went in to the disc and pads of the brakes as I would have it then.

A good clean should be the least they could do for you, but if they're daft enough to not connect the fuel pipe, they'll probably jetwash your engine instead of steam cleaning it.
I'd rather have the cash for 1/2 a tank of fuel off them, then carefully clean the engine myself.
