Been looking for a while for some top quality oil at a decent price so I can do an oil change on my 2.0T; used Mobil1 in the past but it's so expensive, and I don't want to use Asda-brand oil, or Castrol-its-going-cheap-but-its-the-wrong-grade stuff that Tesco sometimes sell at sale prices, as I don't think it's good enough for a modded turbo engine. Then I looked into the relatively new GM Dexos2 oil and it seemed very advanced - obviously it meets GM's own long life standards, but also meets Mercedes', BMW's and VW's long life standards, and Mobil say they're the only UK supplier other than GM whose oil meets the Dexos2 standard, which sounds like a good recommendation/endorsement to me; (and is it a hint that they manufacture it for GM? maybe...)
It's £57 for 5 litres from Vauxhall at retail prices, or £24 at Trade Club price, but I also needed a 1 litre bottle as the engine takes about 5.5 litres, so that's another £18 retail or £9.23 TC, making a total of £75 retail or £33.23 TC.
So I headed off to the local Vx parts counter and picked up the oil from the displays and put it on the counter. The parts guy seemed to be in a good mood and I chatted him up by asking how his classic car is running, (17 mpg, he replied). As he handed me the oil filter (a fiver) I asked if he could throw in the 1 litre bottle for free, and he agreed. So that made a total of £24 for 6 litres of top quality oil, or £29 including the oil filter. That's what I call a bargain.
