Default Looking to buy a Vectra - what should I be aware of?

    Hello all.

I don't yet have a Vectra C but am currently looking to buy a 2007-2008 SRi 150 CDTI. I have been driving a Laguna for the last 8 years so I have no idea what to be looking for regarding faults and general money-pits.

I would appreciate any advice you can offer on what I should be looking out for when inspecting and test-driving the car. I have one or two lined-up for viewing after the weekend and would aim to have it in the drive by next weekend.

Most cars I've seen here in NI are bought at auction in England and re-sold here with the usual mark-up The mileage is generally higher but usually well looked after. Is high mileage (say 70k-80k for 07-08 model) something to avoid? Should a Vectra with a fitted towbar be avoided?

Any other advice would be appreciated.

BTW one trade dealer told me he thought the timing belt on an 08 CDTI was actually a chain, which I believe is not the case ? Correct? What is the belt replacement interval? It it wise to have the water pump changed with the belt (heard stories of it seizing)?

    Thanks.

No suggestions? I saw one yesterday that gave off a small cloud of blue smoke when started from cold, not sure if this is a sign of something needing attention. I took it for a short drive and all seemed ok.

Just not sure if I should be looking out for anything in particular.

Dual Mass Flywheel is the big one to watch with these. Difficulty starting, banging when it's cold. Noise dissapates when the clutch is pressed. Big $$$ to repair.

Common problem I found was the thermostat failing, so it either doesn't read at all or reads abnormally low.

Springs can be a problem I hear.

Alternator prone to failing I hear.
